I fully agree with Edward. I lived in Warsaw for 10 years and have just moved to Montreal, Canada (in 2011). The roads in Montreal are more bumpy than in Warsaw, with lots of cracks in it, and I mean really lots of cracks. A couple of months ago I drove into northern Germany where countryside roads are more or less in the same condition as roads in Poland, some are good, some are not, just about as it is in Poland. Overall, road infrastructure in Poland still needs a lot of investment, but the assumption that Poland's roads are always and everywhere worse than "Western" roads is no longer true (it was true some 20-30 years ago).

I have travelled for two summers in Poland by car and the roads were on par with those in Canada and United States it helps to know the language. The Poles are extremely helpful and courteous to tourists.the petrol stations are for the most up to date .however like all places in the world ours included secondary roads require special care.To be an "inexperienced driver " in my Montreal is fatal.I must cordially disagree with your assessment of road conditions in Poland.
