In the North-East of Poland are extensive forests like the Puszcza Piska and the Puszcza Augustowska, with a network of trails ideal for hiking, biking and horse-riding. Apart from the Bialowieza Forest, a few other woods have survived in the north-east part of Poland as remnants of the vast forests that once extended over the borderlands of medieval Prussia, Lithuania and Poland. The largest of them, is the Augustow Forest (Puszcza Augustowska; 1140 sq km) and the Knyszyn Forest (Puszcza Knyszynska; 839 sq km).
