This panorama show the little panisula Westerplatte on the entrance to de Gdansk harbour.
At dawn of 1st September 1939, the battleship "Schleswig-Holstein" approached to within several hundred metres of Westerplatte and at 4.45 hours opened fire in a surprise attack on the Polish post. Simultaneously, Nazi attacks commenced along the whole of Poland's northern and western borders, thus marking the beginning of the Second World War.
